What does ‘Slumbird’ mean?
Slumbird is bird living in the slums where creativity rules as an answer on poverty and lack on space, commodities… In the slums, waste does not exist in that way that everything, every piece of wood, cardboard, plastic, cotton, iron… can be useful to build/create solutions with. Being a bird, Slumbird is free to do what he likes and to build a house/a world for himself with found materials.
How and why did you start ‘Slumbird’?
Slumbird started, and still is, a creative escape. It keeps me “sharp”. I love creating something with “nothing”, waste I find on my way on the streets. Every small piece of garbage has his identity and story and the coincidental combination of them triggers me to make an image or a poster. It are snapshots in a contemporary tale.
Do you have a huge collection of found materials in your studio?
Yes, I have. I collect it like a treasure. Most of them are very small and fragile. But my new free work I create with what I found that day / week.
Is ‘Slumbird’ a autonomous project or do you also use the images in your work as a graphic designer?
Slumbird started as an autonomous project and is still growing. I use the way of “Slumbird-thinking” in my class “creative design” and my workshops around creativity. I also started using these images in my work as a graphic designer and I hope to use them in adverts.

Slumbird | Bart de Keyser
Bart De Keyser is a Belgian graphical designer. Bart studied graphic design at the SASK in Sint-Niklaas. After that he studied graphics in Temse and Anderlecht. Now he owns a communications agency. He is a teacher and the inventor of ‘Slumbird’.
For this project Bart takes photographs from waste found during his travels. It is taken from small parts of used objects, found stuff and food residues. He completes these pictures with minimal graphical additions, a face, some words, things like that. By doing that the artwork comes alive and starts communicating with the audience.
In a way, he is a storyteller. Every image he creates tells a detailed story.
